The Boston Red Sox today wrapped up the first half of their season going 53-42 and currently hold a two-game lead on the final Wild Card spot. They trail the Minnesota Twins by a half-game for the fifth seed and the Baltimore Orioles by 4.5 games for the American League East division. Tonight the MLB is holding their draft and the Boston Red Sox have selected outfielder Braden Montgomery out of Texas A&M.
OF – Braden Montgomery – Texas A&M
Montgomery started his college career at Stanford playing in 126 games hitting .315 with 30 doubles, three triples, 35 home runs, 118 RBI, 120 runs scored, 12 stolen bases, and 69 walks. Then with the Aggies he played in 61 games this season suffering an injury and missing the College World Series, he hit .322 with a 1.187 OPS; he had 14 doubles, one triple, 27 home runs, 85 RBI, 65 runs scored, five stolen bases, and 53 walks. In 2022 he played at Yarmouth-Dennis of the Cape Cod Baseball League playing in 18 games hitting .250 with a .833 OPS; he had a double, four home runs, 19 RBI, 12 runs scored, and seven walks. In 2023 he was back with Yarmouth-Dennis playing in 14 games hitting .340 with a .900 OPS; he had four doubles, one home run, 12 RBI, 13 runs scored, one stolen base, and nine walks. He wraps up his college career playing in 187 games between Stanford and Texas A&M hitting .317 with a 1.073 OPS; he had 44 doubles, four triples, 62 home runs, 203 RBI, 185 runs scored, 17 stolen bases, and 122 walks.
Wrap Up
The Boston Red Sox were heavily linked to Christian Moore from Tennessee entering the draft but he was selected earlier which led to Boston pivoting to Montgomery. I would have liked the Red Sox drafting a pitcher especially Trey Yesavage as he was still on the board but Montgomery is a nice college bat for the Red Sox to have in their system going forward.
