Baltimore Orioles Find Their Arm in a Deal with Tampa Bay Rays

The Baltimore Orioles and the Tampa Bay Rays announced that they had come to an agreement where Baltimore receives RHP Zach Eflin and cash considerations for RHP Jackson Baumeister (2nd round pick), OF Matthew Etzel (10th round pick), and INF/OF Mac Horvath (2nd round pick). This will boost the Orioles starting rotation that has been thus far plagued with season-ending injuries.

RHP Zach Eflin

Drafted by the San Diego Padres in the first round of the 2012 MLB Amateur Draft right out of high school. MLB Debut with the Philadelphia Phillies on June 14th, 2016 against the Toronto Blue Jays where he went 2.2 innings and gave up nine hits, three walks, eight earned runs, and garnered only two strikeouts. The first seven years of his nine year MLB career were spent with the Phillies before being traded to the Tampa Bay Rays where he has been the past two years. He has a career W/L record of 57-60 with an ERA of 4.26 across 177 games for 947 innings, giving up 967 hits, 486 runs, 448 earned runs, 136 home runs, 197 walks,14 intentional walks, and garnered 825 strikeouts. For the 2024 season with the Tampa Bay Rays Eflin has a W/L record of 5-7 with a 4.09 ERA across 19 games for 110 innings. He has given up 115 hits, 55 runs, 50 earned runs, 14 home runs, 13 walks, and garnered 87 strikeouts.

RHP Jackson Baumeister

Drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the second round of the 2023 MLB Amateur Draft. Baumeister has spent the 2024 season with the Aberdeen IronBirds, the High-A affiliate of the Orioles. Baumeister has W/L record of 1-3 with an ERA of 3.06 across 18 games and 70.2 innings, giving up 53 hits, 31 runs, 24 earned runs, three home runs, 43 walks, and garnering 91 strikeouts.

OF Matthew Etzel

Drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the 10th round of the 2023 MLB Amateur Draft. In 2023 he made brief appearances with the rookie league Orioles, the Delmarva Shorebirds, and the Aberdeen IronBirds. Etzel began the 2024 season with the Aberdeen IronBirds before being called up to the Bowie Baysox. In his two seasons in the Minor Leagues he has a slash line of .297/.388./.461 and has garnered 118 hits, 68 runs, 23 doubles, nine triples, eight home runs, 72 RBIs, 62 stolen bases, 57 walks, and 88 strikeouts.

INF/OF Mac Horvath

Drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the second round of the 2023 MLB Amateur Draft. Horvath began the 2023 season with the rookie league Orioles and ending with the Aberdeen IronBirds. He remained with IronBirds into the 2024 season. In his two seasons in the Minor Leagues he has slashed .252/.358/.459 and has garnered 88 hits, 66 runs, 26 doubles, two triples, 14 home runs, 52 RBIs, 40 stolen bases, 56 walks, and 97 strikeouts.
