Two St. Louis Cardinals Named Player of the Week & Three Named Player of the Month

The St. Louis Cardinals minor league affiliates are entering the last week or second to last week of their seasons. Two of their affiliates will be participating in the playoffs with Double-A Springfield heading to the playoffs in the Texas League and Single-A Palm Beach has started their postseason winning game one last night 8-3. It will play game two on Thursday with a win they advance to the Championship, with a loss they will play a decisive game three on Friday. Five Cardinals prospects took home some hardware as third baseman took home Hitter of the Week honors in the Florida State League as he went 14-28 with three doubles, one home run, nine RBI, eight runs scored, a walk, and a stolen base. RHP Jose Davila took home Pitcher of the Week honors in the Florida State League as he made a start last Wednesday picking up a win going five shutout innings giving up just one hit; he walked one and struck out six. LHP Quinn Mathews took home Pitcher of the Month for August in the Texas League in Double-A as he made four starts going 2-0 with a 0.70 ERA, a 0.58 WHIP, and 40 strikeouts in 25.2 innings. First Baseman Bryan Torres took home Hitter of the Month honors for August in the Texas League as he hit .418 with a 1.029 OPS; he had eight doubles, a home run, 12 RBI, 20 runs scored, 13 walks, and four stolen bases. Finally, RHP Chen-Wei Lin took home Pitcher of the Month honors in the Florida State League for August as he made five starts going 4-0 with a 0.62 ERA, a 0.90 WHIP, and 36 strikeouts in 29 innings.

3B – JJ Wetherholt

Wetherholt was drafted seventh overall by the Cardinals this past July and in 29 games he’s hitting .295 with a .805 OPS; he has five doubles, two home runs, 20 RBI, 18 runs scored, two stolen bases, and 16 walks.

RHP – Jose Davila

Davila made his debut in the Cardinals system in 2021 playing for their rookie league team and Single-A Palm Beach making 15 appearances with nine of those coming as starts going 1-4 with a 4.86 ERA, a 1.47 WHIP, a 5.7 BB/9, and a 9.1 K/9 in 53.2 innings. IN 2022 he was back in the rookie league and with Palm Beach appearing in 15 games again with 13 of those coming as starts going 1-3 with a 3.22 ERA, a 1.26 WHIP, a 3.9 BB/9, and a 7.6 K/9 in 64.1 innings. Last season he was with Palm Beach only appearing in 20 games with ten of those coming as starts going 2-3 with a 5.69 ERA, a 1.51 WHIP, a 3.8 BB/9, and a 6.1 K/9 in 74.1 innings. This season at Palm Beach he’s made 22 appearances with 21 coming as starts he is 6-5 with a 3.54 ERA, a 1.32 WHIP, a 3.8 BB/9, and a 9.3 K/9 in 109.1 innings.

LHP – Quinn Mathews

Mathews was drafted in the fourth round of last season’s MLB Draft. This season in his first season playing in the system he’s made 24 starts across four levels at Single-A Palm Beach, High-A Peoria, Double-A Springfield, and Triple-A Memphis going 8-4 with a 2.47 ERA, a 0.93 WHIP, a 2.9 BB/9, and a 12.9 K/9 in 134.2 innings.

1B – Bryan Torres

Torres has bounced around with different teams but in his first season in the Cardinals system this season he’s played in 116 games hitting .334 with a .840 OPS; he has 28 doubles, two triples, two home runs, 56 RBI, 78 runs scored, 33 stolen bases, and 66 walks.

RHP – Chen-Wei Lin

Lin in his first season in 2023 made six starts going 0-3 with a 6.06 ERA, a 1.84 WHIP, a 6.6 BB/9, and an 11.6 K/9 in 16.1 innings. This season in 22 starts he is 10-5 with a 2.79 ERA, a 1.04 WHIP, a 2.8 BB/9, and a 9.5 K/9 in 116 innings.
