The Twins enter the three-game series with the Detroit Tigers with a 56-45 record four and a half games back in the American League Central Division. After this weekend in Detroit, they will head to New York to play the Mets, before heading home to take on the Chicago White Sox. The Twins currently hold the second wild card spot and will look to extend their lead on the spot, while trying to close the gap on the Cleveland Guardians within the division. Ahead of tonight’s game, the Twins have announced two roster moves.
3B -Royce Lewis
The Twins have activated Lewis from the 10-day injured list today ahead of the weekend series. Lewis has only played in 24 games so far this season for the Twins after multiple stints on the 10-day injured list this year. In those games with the Twins, he has 89 at-bats, 18 runs scored, five doubles, 10 home runs, 18 RBIs, and slashed .292/.354/.685 with a 1.039 OPS. The latest trip on the injured list was due to a Right adductor strain suffered on July, 3rd this year.
RHP – Justin Topa
The Twins have sent Topa on a rehab assignment to Triple-A with the ST. Paul Saints. Topa has been on the injured list since May, 28th this year with Left Pattellar Tendinitis. He recently has been rehabbing with the Fort Myers Might Mussels. He has pitched in five total games so far this season in the minor levels, between Single-A Fort Myers and Triple-A St. Paul where he started the year. So far between the two he has pitched in five innings of work with a 3.60 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP. He has not recorded a win or a loss between levels while walking two and striking out seven.
Overview:
While getting Royce Lewis back in the lineup is good for the Twins, one can’t help but wonder if he can stay healthy long enough to help them close the gap in the division. Can he stay healthy the rest of the way and be the impact bat they need in the playoffs? The trade deadline is here with a few moves already being made throughout the MLB, will the Twins go out and grab another starting pitcher will they grab a bat? Only time will tell, but for now, lets hope Lewis can continue to hit as he has in the few games he has been healthy for this year for the Twins.
