Rich Hill Returns to the Big Leagues

The Royals brought 45-year-old Rich Hill back to the majors, giving the veteran southpaw another shot in a big-league rotation or bullpen role. Hill signed a minor league deal with Kansas City in May and made 11 starts for Omaha and the Royals’ rookie league team. He went 4-4 with a 5.22 ERA, a 1.50 WHIP, and 61 strikeouts in 50 innings.

Despite his age, Rich Hill continues to rely on his deceptive delivery and elite pitch movement. His experience and savvy make him a potential asset for a Royals team trying to stabilize its pitching staff.

Tyler Gentry Designated for Assignment

To make room for Rich Hill on the 40-man roster, the Royals designated outfielder Tyler Gentry for assignment. Gentry entered the season as one of Kansas City’s more intriguing prospects, but he struggled to find consistency at the plate in Triple-A. In 65 games with Omaha, he hit just .205 with a .642 OPS, falling short of expectations.

Gentry still offers some power and athleticism, but the Royals opted to prioritize roster flexibility. Now on waivers, other clubs will have the opportunity to claim him. If he clears, he could remain in the organization as outfield depth.

Andrew Hoffmann Returns to Omaha

The Royals also optioned right-handed pitcher Andrew Hoffmann to Triple-A. Hoffmann made a brief appearance with the big-league club, appearing in three games, posting a 3.86 ERA, a 2.36 WHIP, and five strikeouts in 4.2 innings.

Back in Omaha, Hoffmann went 3-3 with a 2.31 ERA, a 1.13 WHIP, and 55 strikeouts in 39 innings. He will look to get back on track to what earned him a shot at the big leagues.

Looking Ahead

With Rich Hill now on the active roster, the Royals add veteran leadership and a potential innings-eater to the pitching staff. Kansas City continues to explore a mix of youth and experience as it navigates the second half of the season, and these latest moves reflect the organization’s ongoing evaluation of its talent pipeline.
