Breaking: Max Scherzer Leaves Blue Jays Debut With Injury

The Toronto Blue Jays are playing the third game of their four-game series with the Baltimore Orioles. It is currently 6-4 Orioles. Max Scherzer, in his Blue Jays debut, left in the third inning after just 45 pitches due to what the team is saying is right lat soreness. Scherzer had given up two runs on three hits. He didn’t issue a walk and struck out one. Richard Lovelady would replace him, giving up four runs on two hits. He walked one and struck out two.

Scherzer is in his 17th big league season having spent time with the Diamondbacks, Tigers, Nationals, Dodgers, Mets, Rangers, and now Toronto. Entering today he’s made 466 appearances with 457 of those coming as starts going 216-112 with a 3.16 ERA, a 1.08 WHIP, and 3,407 strikeouts in 2,878 innings. He’s a two-time World Series champ winning with the Nationals and Rangers.

Scherzer is also a three-time Cy Young award winner winning in 2013, and back-to-back in 2016 and 2017. In 2013 he went 21-3 with a 2.90 ERA, a 0.97 WHIP, and 240 strikeouts in 214.1 innings. He went 20-7 in 2016 with a 2.96 ERA, a 0.97 WHIP, and 284 strikeouts in 228.1 innings. In 2017 he went 16-6 with a 2.51 ERA, a 0.90 WHIP, and 268 strikeouts in 200.2 innings. Last season in nine starts with Texas he went 2-4 with a 3.95 ERA, a 1.15 WHIP, and 40 strikeouts in 43.1 innings.
