Boston Red Sox All-Star Game Trade Speculation

Boston Red Sox All-Star Game Trade Speculation

The Boston Red Sox entered the All-Star break on a ten-game winning streak and in the second Wild Card spot. The Red Sox traded Rafael Devers back on June 15th. Since then, the Red Sox are 16-9, averaging 5.5 runs per game while allowing 3.9 runs per game. The team is planning to add at the trade deadline. One name they are tied to is right-handed pitcher Joe Ryan. On Monday, Alex Bregman posted on social media a photo of himself, Garrett Crochet, and Joe Ryan. This post fueled the fire of the trade.

If you recall last season’s All-Star game, you might remember a photo. It showed Jaren Duran, Tanner Houck, and Crochet standing on the foul line. Less than five months later, Crochet was acquired by the Red Sox. I know it just happened. The Chicago White Sox come after Boston in alphabetical order of American League teams. But it just happened.

Now it appears Crochet and Bregman, who are both in their first season with the Red Sox, are selling Ryan on the idea of Boston. Ryan also commented on media day about the trade deadline.

If the Red Sox acquire Ryan at the deadline, it’ll make them a dangerous team and potentially one of the best pitching staffs not just in the American League but in all of baseball. They’d have a rotation of Crochet, Ryan, Brayan Bello, Lucas Giolito, and one of Tanner Houck, Walker Buehler, or Richard Fitts in the fifth spot.

Joe Ryan

Ryan, this season in 19 appearances, with 18 of those coming as starts, is 9-4 with a 2.72 ERA, a 3.20 FIP, a 0.92 WHIP, and 121 strikeouts in 109.1 innings. He’s appeared in 103 games in his career, with 102 of those coming as starts. He is 42-30 with a 3.70 ERA, a 3.73 FIP, a 1.04 WHIP, and 646 strikeouts in 579.2 innings.

Wrap Up

The Red Sox would also acquire Ryan and will have him under control for a few seasons. Due to him having control, the package may be a little steep, so the return for this trade would be interesting, but it’s time to go for it, and that means trading prospects despite their talent; it’s time to do it. The Red Sox also have some top prospects who are currently blocked at the big-league level, so it would make them expendable. There are 15 days between now and the trade deadline, but expect this Red Sox team to make a splash.
